Introbiz Hosts Pituitary Foundation Climb Up Pen-Y-Fan

20 May 2014

On Friday, Introbiz organised the Pituitary Foundation charity walk up the Pen-Y-Fan Mountain. It was a great opportunity for everyone to step out from the office for the morning and of course, to raise some cash for a great charity.

Pen-Y-Fan is described as being the daddy of all South Wales walks and is the highest mountain in Southern Britain. It measures at a whopping 886 metres high (that’s 2,907 feet high!) Looking up at the mountain from the car filled us all with a lot of dread – this was going to hurt!

The Pituitary Foundation is a great charity which supports anyone suffering from pituitary disorders and related conditions and diseases. The pituitary gland is an important gland in the body and is referred to as the ‘master gland’ because it controls several of the other hormone glands, such as the thyroid and adrenals.

The pituitary gland is usually about the size of a pea and is based in the hollow behind the bridge of the nose and below the base of the brain. The Pituitary Foundation offers support to those affected and answers any questions you may have.

We set off at 10am with a group of around 40 people, a really great turnout! Many started very confidently, but as mountain grew steeper, the pace slowed and the puffing and panting started. As time went on, we wondered if we’d ever reach the summit! There was a little incident where a small group went the wrong way and found themselves on the wrong summit looking out at Pen-Y-Fan where they were actually supposed to be!

The group made it to the correct summit with an average time of 1 hour and 20 minutes. After lots of pictures with the Pen-Y-Fan sign (we had to have proof that we’d actually done it!) we headed all the way back down the mountain. This took a lot less time, around half an hour, although it did give everyone’s calves a great workout!

The burn and the aching muscles were felt throughout the weekend by all who took part, I’m sure. The aching has only just started to wear off personally! In all seriousness though, it was a fantastic event for a fantastic charity and Introbiz and the rest that partook were definitely honoured and proud to be a part of the event. We also took a great deal of pictures throughout the day so make sure you check them all out.
